Every connection between them requires configuration. Every configuration requires someone who understands what they configured and why. Every one of them will eventually need maintenance, security review, or incident response.

None of this is dramatic. It is the background hum of self-managed infrastructure: constant, low-grade, and always pulling slightly on your most experienced engineers.
You did not choose AWS. You inherited its complexity. The decision was made early, often by one person, for reasons that made sense at the time. What your AWS bill is actually telling you#

The RDS charge is not the cost of your database. It is the cost of the database engine. Most Laravel teams are building applications where the competitive advantage lives entirely in the application layer. The features, the UX, the business logic, the integrations. Nothing in the infrastructure layer is a source of competitive differentiation for them. They are spending engineering time on infrastructure not because it earns them anything, but because they chose a platform that requires it.
That is the real accounting. You are paying your engineers, expensive, scarce engineers, to operate infrastructure that does not make your product better. You are paying them to do it indefinitely, because the operational overhead of self-managed AWS does not go away with familiarity. It just becomes normal. Normal is not the same as justified.
