What you stop doing when you stop owning infrastructure
The real value of moving to a managed platform isn't what you gain. It's what leaves your calendar, your runbooks, and your on-call rotation permanently.
Most conversations about switching to a managed platform focus on what you get. Better deployments. Managed databases. Automatic scaling. Less operational overhead.
That framing is accurate but it undersells the change. The more useful way to think about it is not what you gain but what you stop doing. What leaves your calendar. What leaves your runbooks. What leaves your on-call rotation. What stops being something your team needs to know how to handle.

You stop rotating credentials#
Every IAM access key in your organisation is a rotation obligation. Keys associated with your CI/CD pipeline. Keys used by your application to access S3. Keys for engineers who need programmatic access to AWS resources. Best practice says they should be rotated regularly. Security audits will ask when they were last rotated. When a team member leaves, the keys they had access to need to be reviewed and potentially rotated immediately.
This is not a one-time task. It is a recurring obligation that lives permanently on someone's list.
When the infrastructure layer is handled by a platform, there are no AWS credentials to manage. There is no IAM to configure. There are no access keys to rotate, no policies to audit, no permission boundaries to maintain. The entire credential management surface area disappears.
You stop debugging deploy pipelines#
A self-managed AWS deployment pipeline is one of the most reliable sources of engineering time loss at the companies running them. The pipeline works until it does not, and when it does not, the failure modes span an unusually wide surface area.
The IAM credentials used by the pipeline expired or had permissions changed. The Docker build failed because of a dependency version conflict. The image push to ECR timed out under load. The ECS service failed to stabilise because the new container takes longer to initialise than the health check window allows. The migration task that runs as a separate Fargate task could not reach the database because of a security group rule that was tightened last week.
Each of those failure modes requires different knowledge to diagnose. Each pulls a different person into the investigation. Each has a debugging process that involves navigating AWS console screens or CLI output that most application developers did not sign up to understand.
When you stop owning the deployment pipeline and push to Git instead, those failure modes stop being yours. Deployment failures on a managed platform almost always trace back to the application: a failing test, a bad migration, an error in a build step. That is a failure surface your whole team can debug without specialised infrastructure knowledge.
You stop managing security group rules#
Security groups are the firewall rules that control which AWS resources can talk to which other AWS resources. In a reasonably complex Laravel setup, they govern the connections between your load balancer and your application instances, between your application instances and your RDS database, between your application and ElastiCache, and between your CI pipeline and everything it needs to reach to deploy.
They need to be reviewed when you add a new service. They need to be audited before security reviews. They need to be understood by whoever responds to a networking incident. When a new developer cannot connect to a staging database, the answer is almost always in a security group rule, and finding that answer requires knowing how your security groups are structured.
When the infrastructure layer is handled by a platform, security groups do not exist from your team's perspective. The networking between your application and its dependencies is managed. You do not configure it, review it, or debug it.
You stop owning the certificate lifecycle#
TLS certificates for production applications on AWS involve provisioning through ACM, associating certificates with load balancers, and handling renewal before expiry. If you are running multiple environments or multiple domains, the certificate inventory grows. Renewal is mostly automatic through ACM, but failures happen, and when they do, the symptom is an application serving expired certificates to users, which is a production incident with user-facing impact.
When the platform handles TLS, certificates are provisioned automatically when you connect a domain and renewed without your involvement. The certificate lifecycle is not something your team tracks, manages, or gets paged for.
You stop carrying on-call responsibility for infrastructure incidents#
This is the one that changes daily working life most noticeably.
On a self-managed AWS setup, infrastructure incidents can arrive at any time and from any part of the stack. A memory spike on an EC2 instance at 2am. An RDS connection pool exhausting itself under an unexpected traffic pattern at 11pm on a Sunday. A CloudWatch alarm firing because a deploy caused a spike in error rates that looks like an outage but is actually the application warming up. Someone has to receive those alerts. Someone has to assess them. Someone has to decide whether to wake up a human.
That someone is usually a senior engineer, because they are the person who knows the infrastructure well enough to tell the difference between a real incident and noise. That responsibility does not end when they close their laptop. It is ambient. It shapes how they sleep, how they take holidays, how they think about their evenings.
When the infrastructure layer is handled by a platform, infrastructure incidents are not your team's responsibility to respond to. You stop auditing IAM policies#
IAM is the identity and access management layer that controls permissions across your entire AWS account. In a production setup, IAM policies govern what your application can read and write, what your CI pipeline can deploy, what your engineers can access, and what each AWS service is permitted to do on behalf of the others.
IAM policies need to be reviewed when team members join or leave. They need to be audited before security reviews. They need to be updated when you add new services or change how existing services interact. Getting them wrong in one direction is a security risk. Getting them wrong in the other direction breaks functionality in ways that can take significant time to trace.
AWS is overkill for most product teams, and nowhere is that more visible than in IAM. The permission model is powerful because the surface area it governs is enormous. For a product team running a Laravel application, most of that surface area exists only because they are running on AWS. Move to a platform that handles the infrastructure, and the IAM surface area goes with it.
You stop deferring infrastructure maintenance#
Every self-managed AWS setup accumulates a backlog of infrastructure maintenance work. The RDS minor version upgrade that has been deferred for two quarters because the upgrade window requires a brief outage and nobody has scheduled it. The AMI update on the EC2 instances that is overdue because testing the upgrade path takes half a day. The CloudWatch alarm thresholds that were configured eighteen months ago and have never been revisited. The Terraform state that is drifting from reality because someone made a change directly in the console during an incident.
This backlog does not resolve itself. It grows. And it sits in the background of every infrastructure conversation as a source of low-grade anxiety, the sense that the system is always slightly behind where it should be.
When the platform handles the infrastructure, that maintenance backlog is not yours. Database version upgrades happen on the platform's schedule. Security patches are applied without your team's involvement. You did not choose AWS. You inherited its complexity, including the maintenance debt that accumulates when a small product team is responsible for operating infrastructure at a level of sophistication it was not designed to handle.
What remains#
What is left when all of that stops being your team's responsibility is the work your team was hired to do.
The application. The features. The performance characteristics of the code. The architectural decisions that shape the product over years. The bugs that matter to users. The technical debt in the application layer that keeps accumulating because infrastructure work keeps displacing the bandwidth to address it.
